Highway Code Changes - A Guide To Jan 2022 Law Amendments

Substantive changes to the Highway Code came into force on 29th January 2022, with little publicity, hence why motoring and road safety organisations' research have worryingly discovered that millions of drivers are unaware of the major amendments to The Highway Code. One survey found two in three drivers were unaware of the new laws!

It includes the poster to the right, which can be downloaded and printed off for notice boards etc by clicking on the image.

DAve Joyce, CWU's national health, safety and environment officer writes in Letter to Branches (LTB049/22):

‘THINK!’ is launching a campaign to shift attitudes and encourage safer driving behaviours among road users in the UK.

The campaign will consist of two phases – the first phase launching in February will raise awareness of changes to The Highway Code and the second phase in May/June will seek to drive behaviour change.

The campaign will seek to improve road safety for people walking, cycling and horse riding. Encouraging all road users to ‘Check the changes, let’s keep each other safe’.

Campaign assets will consist of illustrations to help communicate the changes clearly. Messaging reflects The Highway Code and has been kept to a minimum to aid in comprehension.'

The websites below guide you through the rule changes provided by external links to the official Highway Code website enabling you to learn the new rules which the Government says will help protect road users and pedestrians as well cyclists and horse riders.

However, not all of he changes have been welcomed and there are controversial changes around car users and pedestrians.
